Broadcasting services under threat at Doordarshan in India
The Government of India has decided to close down analogue services provided by the broadcasting organisation Doordarshan. This is part of a digitalization process of its broadcasting services. However, the closures are planned to happen before any replacing digital services are put in place. This decision to close transmitters of the terrestrial network will affect 1500 employees, through transfer and displacement of jobs. Closure of analogue services will also affect the rights of the Indian people, as many will now face reduced access to broadcasting services. Most likely this will only be a first step, and according to our information plans are already in place to close numerous other transmitters, eventually affecting 5000 employees.
We support the employees at Doordarshan and ARTEE in their demands for the preservation of the 1500 jobs in the threatened services.
The Government of India needs to protect the continuity of work at Doordarshan and the rights of the Indian people by ensuring that digital services are put in place before any closure of analogue services.
Please see below for our solidarity letter which we have sent to the Government of India as well as to the management of the public service broadcasting services.
