UNI MEI signs first Global Agreement with Media Prima in Malaysia
UNI Global Union today signed its first global agreement in the media sector with Malaysian-based media company Media Prima Berhad.
UNI MEI Global Union and Malaysian media workers’ union KESATUAN (Television Malaysia Employees' Union) have negotiated an agreement with Media Prima that is a commitment to work in partnership with the union and UNI based on respect for workers and trade union rights. UNI MEI represents workers in the media, entertainment and information sectors.
This is the first global agreement for UNI in the media sector and the first agreement signed by a company based in Malaysia. Intense efforts by KESATUAN and the UNI Malaysia Liaison Council made the agreement possible, UNI said.
The signing comes just after the creation of a new national commerce union in Malaysia and just before UNI will sign two more global agreements in Indonesia on Friday.
“UNI MEI global union is delighted that we made this first step to sign a global framework agreement and we look forward to working with the company to make progress,” said Johannes Studinger, head of UNI MEI.
The agreement was signed by Media Prima Chairman Johan Jaaffar and by Studinger, UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings and UNI Apro President Joe de Bruyn. The new understanding is built on the foundation of positive relations with UNI’s local affiliate and media prima.
Each day Media Prima’s TV3 attracts 21 million viewers in Malaysia, making it a household name in the region.
“By signing this agreement, Media Prima is committing to wider stakeholder engagement and to be a socially responsible employer,” Jennings said.
