Highlights on... Organising drive for supermarket workers in Malaysia
Building union membership among shopworkers in Malaysia is the key target of a new, two-year organising project launched by UNI Development with Handels and HTF of Sweden.
Supermarket chains - including Japanese and Western multinationals - employing 10,000 people will be the first priority in a unionising drive backed by UNI Commerce and UNI Liaison Council Malaysia that will also embrace migrant workers.
“Our job is to organise the unorganised and we will make the Commerce sector number one in Malaysia,” Liaison Council President Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal told a project workshop, held in UNI offices in Nyon, Switzerland. “We will be a help desk for these workers and we are going to have workshops to train their leaders.”

Development and Region's projects ...
... are carried out through different forms of project co-operation that gives unions the possibility to develop their capacity and internal structures, organise, defend the interests of workers, strengthen democracy and work towards equality and growth.
UNI’s programme of worldwide solidarity is to provide opportunities to educate and better equip unions and their members. The broad aims of the development activities are to build strong, democratic and independent trade unions in sectors represented by UNI to sustain UNI's representation and impact world wide.
This is the work of the Development and Regions' Department, DRD at the UNI Head Office in Nyon, which is responsible for the co-ordination and implementation of projects with affiliates in the regions, to improve communication and co-operation between funding organisations, supporting affiliates and field organisations. In the implementation of development projects, the department works in close co-operation with the UNI Regional Offices in Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean and with Asia and the Pacific, which are essential links to the project partners in the field. For the education and development activities UNI counts on the technical and financial support of its affiliates and their funding organisations in respective countries.
