UNI global union has welcomed the social as well as commercial challenge that the entry of UK-based retailer Tesco into the United States will pose to Wal-Mart.
UNI global union today announced moves to bring together UK union Usdaw along with US commerce affiliate UFCW in a meeting with Tesco’s top management.
Tesco - which has a 30% share of the UK grocery market and is present in 13 countries in Europe and Asia - will launch stores on the US west coast next year and promises rapid expansion.
Tesco recognises unions in the UK and elsewhere – in sharp contrast to Wal-Mart’s viciously anti-union stance in the United States.
“Tesco is a socially responsible retailer with a partnership agreement with UK union Usdaw,” said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings.
“As a global union we have cooperated successfully with Tesco in promoting dialogue between the company, its unions and its workers and unions have collective agreements in several new markets around the world.”
Tesco share price gained three percent last year compared to Wal-Mart’s eleven per cent decline.
“Tesco’s success shows that treating workers fairly and working with their unions is better for business than the bullying and union-busting favoured by Wal-Mart,” said Mr Jennings.
“We are convinced that Tesco will bring its positive labour relations culture to the US market.”
