RWDSU President elected as UNI Commerce Global President
President Stuart Appelbaum of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) in the United States was elected to a four-year term as UNI Commerce Global President on the final day of the global meeting in Berlin.
UNI Commerce is the global union for the retail and wholesale industry and represents more than 4 million workers in 160 unions around the world.
“I want to thank the delegates to the UNI Commerce Global Conference, which met in Berlin this week, for electing me to a four-year term as president. At this critical time, we must bring working people together across their differences. We must help them understand their common interests. And we must stand ready to fight and organize as a globally unified labour movement. I am proud to bring together our 160 unions that represent 4 million workers as we work to build the movement that will deliver,” said Stuart Appelbaum, President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU).
President Appelbaum confirmed that the next UNI Commerce Global conference would be held in New York in four years.
UNI Global Union General Secretary Philip Jennings paid tribute to President Appelbaum as the right person for what would be a challenging role in the commerce sector which both Jennings and Appelbaum have described as the engine room of UNI Global Union.
