Gender mainstreaming for Palestinian and Jordanian unions
In an effort to increase women's visibility and participation in unions, the UNI Equal Opportunities department was invited by UNI ICTS and UNI Finance to present to both Palestinian and Jordanian unions on the importance of gender mainstreaming for union growth and strength.
The training workshops, which took place in Amman from 8-10 August (UNI ICTS) and 11-14 August (UNI Finance) respectively, focused on issues such as organizing for union growth and collective bargaining as well as building bargaining power.
During its presentation, the UNI Equal Opportunities had the opportunity to raise awareness on key issues for working women, such as the importance of bringing more women into unions, raising the visibility of their issues as a strategy to organize and recruit more women in the union, and UNI Equal Opportunities campaigns and activities. As an added bonus, the UNI Equal Opportunities Department was accompanied by the UNI MENA women's network coordinator, who provided valuable insight on the effectiveness of support networks in the region.
These workshops come as an effort from UNI Global Union and its affiliates to support the Palestinian trade union movement; and in the particular case of UNI Equal Oppportunities, to set the bases for strong women representation in Palestinian and Jordanian unions and to further create support women's networks in the region.
