The third UNI Europa Conference in Toulouse ended with an emotional debate about solidarity around the globe to support trade unionists in their work. The European trade unions have to be aware of their importance and responsibility and use their influence and their weight to support colleagues all over the world.

The conference ended with the elections of the regional secretary and the president with a strong mandate. Oliver Roethig has won a four-year term as UNI Europa Regional Secretary and thanked delegates for the vote of confidence. Frank Bsirske was re-elected as President.

"UNI is us. It is all of us," Bsirske said. "Now let's get to work."

The conference closed with a thank you to all members of staff, volunteers and especially the three French trade unions CGT, CFDT and FO who worked together to produce a successful conference.

At the closing ceremony two rugby teams took the stage and wrestled for the ball which has been passed symbolically from the French team to the Italian team, which will now prepare for the next UNI Europa Conference in Rome in 2015.

A lot of work is in front of us as we work to achieve the goals set during the conference to rebuild 'Social Europe' and build trade union rights and power. If we work together we will wing this fight!

We expect to see our European unions just as motivated and enthusiastic in 4 years in Rome again!

Der Ball wird weiter gegeben - wir sehen uns in 4 Jahren in Rom

Die 3. UNI Europa Konferenz in Toulouse endete mit einer emotionalen Debatte zur Solidarität rund um den Erdball um weltweit GewerkschafterInnen in ihrer Arbeit zu unterstützen. Die europäischen Gewerkschaften müssen sich ihrer wichtigen Stellung und Verantwortung bewusst sein und mit ihrem Einfluss udn ihrem Gewicht KollegInnen weltweit unterstützen.

Die Konferenz endete mit dem Ergebnis der Wahlen zum UNI Europa Regionalsekretär und Vorsitzenden. Oliver Roethig wurde mit 100% für die nächsten 4 Jahre in sein Amt gewählt und erhielt damit das Vertrauen der gesamten Konferenz. Auch Frank Bsirske wurde mit überwältigender Mehrheit und weit über 90% in seinem Amt bestätigt.

Die Konferenz endete mit Danksagungen an alle Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter und speziell an die drei französischen Gewerkschaften CGT, CFDT und FO, die gemeinsam mit voller Kraft diese Konferenz ermöglichten. Zwei Rugby Teams in UNI Europa Dressen stürmten zum Schluss die Bühne und rangen um den Ball, der symbolisch vom französischen Team dem italienischen Team übergeben wurde. Viel Arbeit liegt nun vor uns, die wir auf Basis unserer Beschlüsse umsetzen müssen und wir sehen uns hoffentlich alle motiviert und enthusiastisch in Rom wieder!

UNI Europa Youth actions at the 3rd UNI Europa Conference.

All in all we had some successful days here in Toulouse. During the conference, we had many meetings with the young delegates from all over Europe. On day three, we took the stage with a role play, the UNI Europa Youth steering group and an Austrian youth delegate were doctors, explaining how the lack of youth involvement in the unions is a curable “sickness”. We handed out prescriptions and water bottles with instructions on how to involve the youth throughout the unions, workers councils, the collective bargaining processes and co-operation with other youth organizations such as student organizations. We would like to thank the young delegates; Julia (Austria), Çağdaş (Turkey), Nils (Netherlands),  Marijke (Netherlands), Alessandro (Italy), Marisa (Italy), Isabell (Sweden), Susan (Netherlands),  Francois (France), Emilie (France), Nina (Slovenia) who helped us with our actions and meetings during the conference.

Junge Delgierten fordern eine faire Zukunft und Unterstützung der Gewerkschaften für junge Menschen

In einer Aktion verschrieben die jungen Delegierten den TeilnehmerInnen der UNI Europa Konferenz die Medizin für die Zukunft für die Gewerkschaftsbewegung: Investments in die Jugend. Sie erinnerten daran, dass auch Philipp Jennings und Oliver Roethig aus der Jugendbewegung kommen und es wert und wichtig ist Arbeit und Ressourcen in die Interessen der Jugend zu stecken sowie ihnen ein eigenes Budget zur Verfügung zu stellen. Aber es ist auch wichtig tägliche Gewerkschaftsarbeit in junge ArbeitnehmerInnen zu investieren. So forderte UNI Europa Jugend Betriebsräte auf, auf junge Menschen zuzugehen, die Zusammenarbeit mit Jugendorganisationen auszubauen und junge Menschen in Tarifvertragsverhandlungen mit einzubeziehen. Das ist die Medizin für die Zukunft.

Am späteren Vormittag des dritten Tages der UNI Europa Konferenz in Toulouse organisierte UNI Europa Jugend eine eindrucksvolle Demonstration für die Rechte und Interessen der jungen Beschäftigten. Junge Beschäftigte aus ganz Europa schilderten die Bedingungen denen junge Menschen am Arbeitsplatz ausgesetzt sind. Leiharbeit, Kurzzeitverträge, niedrige Gehälter und keine Aus- und Weiterbbildungsplätze sind der traurige Alltag junger ArbeiterInnen. Es ist höchste Zeit, dass sich die Gewerkschaften und UNI Europa den Interessen und Bedeürfnisse verstärkt widmen. Viele dieser Probleme sind europaweit die selben und müssen gemeinsam gelöst werden. UNI Europa Jugend startete mehrere Aktionen auf europäischer Ebene um auf die Situation Aufmerksam zu machen und rief UNI Europa und die Mitgliedsgewerkschaften dazu auf, ihre Aktivitäten aktiv zu unterstützen.

Die Kraft der Gewerkschaften liegt in ihren Mitgliedern

Der Vormittag des dritten und letzten Tages der UNI Europa Konferenz in Toulouse drehte sich um das Thema Organising und wie man neue Mitglieder und MitstreiterInnen für die Gewerkschaften gewinnen kann. Mit beeindruckenden Berichten aus allen UNI Europa Sektoren und aus den verschiedenen Ländern beschrieben die RednerInnen ihre Bemühungen und die geleistete Arbeit.
Dabei zeigte sich, dass gerade in multinationalen Unternehmen das Netzwerk und der Zusammenschluss in UNI Europa essentiell für den Erfolg ist. Auch bei der Organisierung und Werbung von Mitglieder macht es einen Unterschied gemeinsam und mit gegenseitiger Unterstützung durch beispielsweise Austausch von Informationen zu handeln und Strategien zu entwickeln.
Die Konferenz beschloss einen Antrag indem die Delegierten zum Ausdruck brachten, dass die Bemühungen neue Mitglieder zu werben und die Arbeit und Unterstützung dazu von Seiten UNI Europas in den nächsten Jahren noch zu intensivieren und auszubauen. Die Kraft der Gewerkschaften liegt in ihren Mitgliedern und je stärker wir sind, desto mehr erreichen wir und können die Welt in unserem Sinne, im Sinne der Arbeiterinnen und Arbeiter in Europa gestalten.

UNI Europa Congress kicks off Call Centre Action Month in Toulouse, France

Today the UNI Europa Congress held in Toulouse, France, applauded the work unions are doing in call centres to change the rules of the game by working in a solidarity across the world to improve the conditions of workers in the sector.

Franca Salis-Madinier, UNI Europa ICTS President, told congress delegates, “The working conditions are particularly restrictive in call centres. UNI Call Centre Action Month has contributed to the improvement of benefits to workers in the sector. International trade union coordination with UNI led to the development of solidarity beyond borders and gives meaning to the European trade union involvement.”

In Belgium working conditions for 400 000 workers in outsourced call centres are negotiated by collective agreements.  Claude Lambrechts, from CNE-CSC Belgium, presented a success story from her union’s participation in Call Centre Action Month. She said, “We have participated in Call Centre Action Month since 2006, with our colleagues from LBC-NVK Belgium. This campaign helps to give visibility to the union work done in call centre companies.”

A few years ago CNE-CSC held an action called “STOP THE BOSS” that resulted in workers getting an additional break of 10 minutes!

In 2011 CNE-CSC will focus on the need to have a place of social dialogue more appropriate to the reality of call centres. Covering topics such as harmonisation of working conditions, and improving conditions which is essential to limit social dumping between companies. Unions challenge the sector's social partners on this issue and alert the political scene to their campaigns.

Union delegates will place on their European Works Council agendas an item to demand adherence to basic principles and minimum standards contained in the ETNO call centre guidelines. They will also question their respective companies’ leadership on the need to create more targeted consultation through EWCs.

Finally, the union will call on governments to carry out studies on working conditions in the call centre sector. A research project is already underway at the initiative of the Federal Public Service through the Employment, Labour, and Social Dialogue. The dialogue aims to better understand the difficulties and risks in terms of well-being at work. A support committee will be composed of experts inside and outside the Public Service, by the social partners and by researchers.

Claude says, “At CNE-CSC we attach great importance to Call Centre Action Month because it is a concrete and visible way to raise standards through international trade union work.”

L’Europe a besoin d’une stratégie de croissance durable - MAINTENANT!

Les dirigeants syndicaux européens ont demandé l’arrêt de mesures d'austérité et se sont engagés à mobiliser pour la reconstruction de l'économie européenne en passant par l'emploi, la protection sociale et des salaires décents. UNI-Europa s’exprime en faveur d’un retour au modèle social européen qui assure un filet de protection sociale, l’école gratuite, un logement adéquat, un salaire et une retraite décents et des politiques de relance d’emplois de qualité. La résolution affirme également que chaque travailleur devrait avoir le droit d'adhérer à un syndicat et de faire partie d'une convention collective. Europe needs a sustainable growth strategy NOW!

In a resolution passed by conference delegates, UNI Europa is demanding a return to the European social model that ensures a social safety net, free education, adequate housing, a living wage and pensions and active labour market policies for quality jobs. The resolution also says that every worker should have the right to join a union and coverage under a collective agreement.

Postal workers demonstrate against postal liberalisation in Europe

Post workers in their uniforms from a cross Europe opened the afternoon session of the UNI Europa Conference in Toulouse. With a march through the conference room, they called the attention of the delegates to the dramatic situation in the European postal sector.  The European Union completed liberalisation of the postal market in all Member States on the 1st of January 2011. The consequences are lower quality postal services, higher prices and social dumping created by competition based on salaries and wages.

Ingeborg Saetre, president of UNI Europa Post&Logistics presented the success of the Norwegian postal union, which used information on the EU situation and the support of the European postal trade unions and UNI Europa Post & Logistics to stop postal liberalisation in Norway. The Norwegian parliament listened finally to postal union Postkom's arguments and decided not to implement the Directive as they are not member of the European Union.

Despite this great success, post liberalisation continues unabated in the Member States of the EU. The postal trade unions are fighting together with UNI Europa Post & Logistics against the negative consequences of postal liberalisation and demanding to regulate deregulation and create quality jobs for quality services.
