Protests in Kuala Lumpur
Over 500 members of UNI affiliate, the National Union of Telecommunications Employees (NUTE) who are Call Centre Workers at the Retail Customer Contact Centre (TMRCC) picketed in front of the Telekom Malaysia Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur to protest over the company’s decision to proceed with the “IN-SOURCING” of the call centres to VADS LTD on 10th October 2006 Pickets were held in the towns of Johore Baru and Malacca which drew more the 300 members from the call centres.
Another picket took place in Sarawak with over 500 protesting and a further 100 members from the Call Centres in Sabah also holding pickets to protest over the company’s decision to go ahead with the plan to give option papers to TMRCC Call Centre Workers and 20th October 2006 as the last day to exercise the option to join VADS Ltd
NUTE and two other unions have instructed call centre members not to sign the option forms until the company settles the dispute on the Terms and Conditions of the transfer of TMRCC workers to VADS Ltd.
Delegates to the UNI Call Centre seminar being held in Nyon, Switzerland 10-12 October 2006, have sent their full solidarity to the workers and are planning to have a special teleconference during the meeting with Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, President of NUTE Malaysia on 12th October.
