UNI Women celebrating
The International Women’s Day is the occasion to celebrate progress made towards equality. It is a day when women are recognized for their contributions to society without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, cultural, economic or political.
For labour women, the day has a particular significance. On that day, all around the world, women are rallying to demonstrate for their rights and express their solidarity with other working women.
UNI has pledged to achieving gender equality from its birth and has, ever since, promoted the full participation of women as equal partners with men in securing he right to organize and fight for better working conditions and full respect for human rights. The empowerment of women continues to be a central feature of the UNI's efforts to address social, economic and political challenges across the globe.
While women's activism, unionism and legislative changes have paved the way for women to have more opportunities than ever before in some parts of the world, the struggle for equality at work is not over anywhere.
There are still some significant obstacles to women's equitable participation in the workforce.
  • Women’s work continues to be undervalued, underpaid, or not paid at all.
  • Many women still do not have access to decent jobs.
  • Many women still have not got the right to organize and bargain collectively.
  • Many women still have not access to social security coverage, health services and maternity protection.
  • Many women still do not receive equal pay for work of equal value, even where required by legislation.
  • Many women are still victims of harassment and gender based violence.

Therefore, 8 of March is also a day when women are
Claiming
  • the right to organize for all workers, whatever their status
  • maternity protection in line with the ILO Convention 183 for all women workers
  • affordable quality childcare services
  • the effective implementation of pay equity as required by the Convention 100
  • to STOP violence against women and girls
and Protesting
  • against discriminations in workplaces
  • against unfair treatment
  • against inhuman working conditions
  • lack of respect.
UNI wishes you all a wonderful and successful Women’s Day!
