World Bank Projects in UNI Sectors

In recent years the World Bank has responded to criticism from non-governmental organizations about its lack of transparency by making more of its internal documents available to the public. (Click http://www.worldbank.org/html/pic/Dp_root.htm to read the Bank’s policy on information disclosure policy.)

Project Information Documents (PIDs) from the IBRD and IDA and Summary of Project Information documents (SPIs) from the IFC are available online from the World Bank web site (click http://www.worldbank.org/html/extdr/projects.htm). These documents are written by World Bank staff and are used to prepare loan proposals for the approval of the Bank’s Board of Executive Directors. Those related to UNI sectors are provided in this database for your convenience.

Other Project Documents

Note: Not all PIDs and SPIs result in loan proposals and not all loan proposals result in actual projects funded by the Bank. A Project Appraisal Document (PAD) is prepared for projects that are presented to the Board for funding. Unfortunately, PADs are not publicly available until after a loan is approved. PADs are available from the World Bank Infoshop in Washington D.C. (click here) or can be requested from the NGO Liaisons in World Bank Country Offices (click here for a list of country offices and NGO liaisons).

Other documents related to World Bank projects are also available from the World Bank. Affiliates should request the following documents for their countries if they wish to obtain background information on projects in their sectors: The Country Assistance Strategy (CAS), the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PSRP) and any Country Economic and Sector Work papers.

Affiliates needing assistance in obtaining documents from the Bank should contact jim.sauber@union-network.org.
