Women's March

Ever since the first International Women’s Day, women have been demanding bread and roses. This claim is unfortunately still topical today – women have not come a long way when it comes to issues of violence and poverty. It is time for change.

The International Women’s Day was born out of a demonstration by New York women textile workers protesting against low wages and poor working conditions and has been celebrated since 1975.

For several years now UNI affiliates around the world have participated in and launched actions designed to raise public awareness on their women’s members problems or publicly condemn inequality of treatment or violations of women’s rights on 8 March. In 1999 a global "Stop Violence" campaign was launched with a poster and pins.
This campaign is an ongoing campaign and is based on the following statement

World Women’s March 2000

Against Poverty and Violence suffered by women
The march will depart simultaneously from several towns, including Geneva, New York and Montreal, on 8 March and will continue until 17 October, the international day for the eradication of poverty, when it will end in a rally in New York outside the United Nations, after going past the headquarters of the World Bank and the IMF in Washington.
Women have 2000 reasons to march. To name just a few:

  • How many women’s fundamental rights are violated?

  • How many women in the world are homeless and have to live on the street?

  • How many women work for minimum wages?

  • How many women are jobless?

  • How many women are in precarious employment relationships?

  • How many women are beaten?

  • How many women suffer violence at work or at home?

  • How many women are harassed?

  • How many girls cannot go to school?

UNI headquarter staff will join the march in Geneva carrying the stop violence poster and distribute the pin.
